The trucking school I was attending went out of business 10 days before my DMV appointment. I rented a truck from Ali to take my test. His excellent instructors were able to get me dialed in for my test and supplied me with a tractor trailer to use for my DMV test. With their help, I passed the test on my first attempt. The facility is a little rough around the edges, for example the skills yard is a dirt lot, and the trucks used in the skills hard have seen better days. The upside to this is that if you can do your backing skills in a tired old truck in a bumpy dirt lot, the DMV test will feel much easier because you'll be testing on a smoothly paved surface in a much nicer truck! They use synchronized 6 speed transmissions in medium duty trucks, so no grinding gears and easy to maneuver around town. They also run flatbed trailers so it is much easier to see where your passenger side rear corner is while you're backing. They also have instructors that speak several languages, so if you struggle with English, you won't be totally lost. The only downside I see with this school is that students don't learn how to use a 10 speed Eaton Fuller transmission which is one of the most common transmissions found in heavy trucks. However, this may not be as big of an issue anymore with so many companies switching to automatics.

One thing in general that I will say to prospective CDL students: you get out of it what you put into it. The instructors can tell you what you need to know and guide you as much as they can, but it is up to you to practice and commit everything to memory. It's not rocket science, and with enough repetition, anybody can learn to drive a tractor trailer and pass the class A CDL test. Learn your pretrip inspections and airbrakes tests so thoroughly that you can recite them laying in bed before you fall asleep every night. When driving, stay calm relaxed. Start slowing down well before you would in your personal vehicle so you have plenty of time to downshift. Go nice and slow when you're backing up so you have time to make corrections. Stop FULLY at stop signs even when pulling forward into the crosswalk to see around an obstruction. And whatever you do, always always always enter and exit the vehicle facing the cab with three points of contact! Dedicate as much time as you possibly can into learning and practicing, and you can do it just like I did.
