❌ Dangerous Cars and Ridiculous Charges – Avoid This Location! ❌
We rented a car from Hertz at PHX for the Christmas holiday, and it was one of the worst experiences ever. We picked a 2024 Camry LE, and on the way to Sedona, the right-front tire suddenly blew out on the highway—super dangerous! Turns out, Hertz hadn’t maintained the car properly:
- The TPMS had been broken since June 2024 (so no tire pressure warnings).
- The car missed its September maintenance check, so the low tire pressure wasn’t caught.

We were lucky no one got hurt. We had to replace the tire with the spare, and carefully drove back to the PHX Hertz location. The agent there admitted it was Hertz’s fault and even promised we wouldn’t be charged for the tire.

Fast forward to the final receipt:
- $250 for the tire (seriously?)
- $50 cleaning fee (for what?!)
- Other random fees, including “Operation/Maintenance Recovery.” ?

Hertz, this is unacceptable. You failed to maintain the car, put us in danger, and then charged us for your own mistakes.

If you care about your safety or your wallet, don’t rent from here. This experience was a disaster from start to finish. ?

Way under-staffed. We had reserved a car over a month prior to our trip and we still had to wait in a 30 minute line just to pick up our car. There were 16 customer service counters but only 2 were open, and for some reason the agents were taking almost 20 minutes to check in every customer. It was very obvious that the 2 agents there didn’t have any sense of urgency in getting people checked out and making the line go faster - having conversations about the customers hair and looking at pictures on her phone while there’s over 10 people waiting in line. Slowest rental car service I’ve ever experienced.

As presidents circle I enjoy the benefits of choosing the car in the parking lot. I always get the best cars that I need mostly for business trips..
In my recent rental returns at the Phoenix, the guy named REX helped us a lot. He is awesome its sad that We got charged for fuel because we forgot to fill the tank as we need to hurry for our upcoming flights. Rex helped us a lot and make the return easily for us. Thank you!

Be careful - this location absolutely engages in predatory practices. Dealing with them downright feels slimy.

The short of it is that you need to be very careful with your rental agreement and what you agree to regarding insurance. Despite paying for my entire rental three months in advance through Capital One Travel, this location attempted to double my bill and claim it was just the credit card hold. Sniffing out the scam, I asked them directly - three separate times - for a promise that the full charge would go away. Incredibly the story changed when I pressed a little harder and I managed to walk away without an extra $900 in unnecessary insurance.

Just be super careful if you ever give these crooks your business.

Better yet, go to a rental agency next door.

Just wanted to shout out Amanda who works at one of the desks here. I had a prepaid rental under my spouse's name but we realized too late that his license expired - we were on hold with our travel agency forever to try to change the reservation to my name (which ended up not being something Hertz customer service wouldn't allow!) We ended up having to cancel and rebook for the reservation to be under my name (which is why it's always better to book direct). I was nervous about what kind of car we could get at the last minute with our new booking during the busy pre-Christmas season, but Amanda was so helpful. She put us into a nice Nissan Altima at a great price - it ended up being cheaper than the prepaid reservation! I really appreciated her kindness in a stressful time and how quickly they got us in the car. It drove well and there were no additional charges at the end.

I generally have a good experience with Hertz which is why I am giving it a 3 instead of 1. I tavel for work I rent 1-2 times a month in Phoenix. I like that I can go pick a car myself from the row available. This trip was not smooth when I go to check out it took me almost an hour sitting the car to waiting in the worker to check me out so I could leave. First she said my driver's license wasn't correct (only license I have and have used every other time I rent there), then says my cc was declining which I found odd so I gave her another one and said it also was declined so I start to get worried that my identity had been stolen or something and call the cc companies on my cards they assure me there is credit balances available and they are not declining it. Meanwhile I ask if there is a supervisor or someone else that can help us because I am going to be late for a meeting. Still wait for system to reboot, etc. Meanwhile all the other lines are checking cars out quickly. Finally someone comes to help and they determine that the car had not been checked in from previous driver so can't check me out with it. They tell me that I have to drive back and return the car and pick another car and come back and they will check to see if that works. Mind you it had already been over 45 minutes. I follow these instructions and it finally works. This time no problems with my ID, my CC or anything. BUT, I was 20 minutes late for my meeting so they canceled..
Crazy thing is a few trips ago same thing happened with the car not being checked in but the person recognized it right away and made a call so they could check it in and we were then able to let me check it out and whole process took maybe 15-20 minutes. So this seems to be a recurring problem with not getting cars checked in adequately which affects the next driver. Surely there is a fix to this process problem versus me needing to just use another company.

Had a reservation for 1/9 early morning which was for a small pick up , spoke to a middle age woman didn’t get her name because she wasn’t wearing a name tag and refused to give me her name
Regarding my reservation which was incorrect (no presidential circle rate or military rate) . At this point I had raised concern to the individual that it was incorrect and the rate should be different . I had both valid forms of ID to prove it which one was my Drivers license and Military ID . She then stated “just because you’re a military doesn’t mean this is Burger King ….you can’t have it your way!”
The whole interaction shifted in a negative and belittling way almost to a point where it was uncomfortable for me and my guests that were with me. She continued being rude and disrespectful additionally saying we should get insurance which we denied numerous times because of the way we were dressed and looked ( we had our work attire on for a field meeting- hard hat strapped to backpack , work boots , etc) didn’t seem like we can pay for a $50k truck if we were to get in an accident (we have our own coverage through American Express and personal auto coverage )

I found this comment to be extremely disrespectful not only to me but to all service members . I’ve never been treated like this at any hertz branch not only is it unprofessional but it’s rude . I will continue to steer my fellow colleagues and service members away from this company due to this incident ! Thank you again Hertz
