Though all the people we dealt with were very friendly and professional, we had one hiccup. The rear tires were bald, and one had a slash in the tread. We didn't see this until later. They traded the vehicle without question, and we received a larger vehicle with no problem. We were there for a funeral and had to travel between a couple of cities. The tires would not have safely cut it in the mountains with the snow and rainy Forecast. Unfortunately, they would not swap the vehicle at our location. We had to travel back to the airport to make the trade. It kind of dug into a very tight schedule. Everyone was very nice, however, fleet maintenance should have caught this.

Just a warning to other customers that favor Hertz - this is not a location I recommend renting from. If you do, get pictures of everything inside and out and ask for any extra charges and make sure you get a receipt before you leave. I’m not sure if they recognize extra revenue from adding additional charges these days or the people get commission on the but something is driving this behavior as seen in my experience and many reviews below mine sadly.

I have been using Hertz on and off for my professional career and for personal years my husband and I both prefer it.

I however, I have never had an experience upon checking out and receiving an additional bill and I did nothing that I’ve ever done differently. We travel with our small train dog for ESA and psychiatric support service. I saw a charge for $150 upon my check out the next day.

I wrote Customer Service and was told that number I was informed of these charges which is not true. And that the car was left and there was an odor which is also not true. I took photos as I normally do the inside and I’ve sent them in, but either way this is absolutely bogus .

My son rented a car from this location. It was dirty and within a few days he had to take it back because it needed an oil change. The second car was cleaner but smelled when he got. He then just took it back as he is leaving the area today. The representative said the vehicle smells of smoke and once the inspector of the vehicle confirms it you will be charged a $400 cleaning fee. Kicker is my son doesnt and has never smoked he had asthma as a child so he never tried to be around smokers. By the way you can search it up yourself they charged this fee multiple times to other customers. They also charged customers other fees for no reason. This is not a good company. They struggled after covid and now I guess they are just trying to take innocent people's money to help them financially. Don't ever rent from them go to some other company who doesn't charge fees after fees.

The initial vehicle received had a slightly dirty interior. When I brought up the issue the staff offered to clean or provide an appropriate replacement. Justin, in particular, was extremely helpful and professional. His excellent customer service reinforced my confidence to continue renting from Hertz

I rented a car from 6/29/2024 to 7/7/2024. The original car they gave me drove kid of funny (it was a new GMC Terrain and it abruptly stopped every time I released a gas pedal), so I asked for an alternative. They were nice enough to give me an older Hyundai Tuscon (it had over 20K miles, but drove a lot smoother).

The Hyundai had a quarter size rusted chip spot and had no mats. I wondered if it would be a problem since I was planning to go to the ocean in South California and was afraid the sand would be all over carpet, but the attendant said it should be no problem: they would vacuum everything. I took pictures just in case.

The gas estimate showed below 400 miles (don't remember now, but I think it was 370 something, and I was bummed because the GMCs estimate showed over 400 miles and I thought the gas tank capacity/mileage in Hyundai was lower, which ended up not being the case because when I filled it, the estimate jumped over 400 miles, so the tank was not full when I got it).

Anyway, I stopped by a dollar store and spent $5 on mats (cut them to the car profile and they worked quite nicely for the trip). Also put some construction paper in the trunk to prevent sand. The car worked fine for the 9 days I used it.

I dropped the car at the expected time, was told everything was fine, got an email notification about rental completion with zero balances, and almost forgot about it, when three days later I got a notification from my credit card showing a just posted pending $118 charge by Hertz.

I checked my credit card record and it showed the original $200 hold (was supposed to be removed 48 hours after the completion, but I do not mind it staying since I know what it was) and the just posted $118.

I called the Sacramento Hertz office, spent about 20 minutes messing with the menu options, but could not figure out how to reach a live person. So, I called the corporate office, waited on hold for about half hour, and finally got transferred to an agent. The call took about 15-20 minutes. The agent had to do some research and told that the $118 charge was for the gas refill. Well, I did refill the car and, lucky me, I took a photo when I dropped it off showing the dash with the full gas tank, so I sent the photo to the agent and he promised to resolve the issue in about 7 business days.

The reason I'm leaving a one-start review is that this kind of behavior borders fraud. A similar thing happened to me in Texas when I returned a rental to Avis at the airport, but I noticed it on the receipt they gave me, so I addressed it immediately. In the Hertz case, they gave me no receipt, the receipt I got over email had zero charges, and the charge appeared 3 days after I returned the car. So, I am upset that I had to waste over an hour calling Hertz and dealing with customer support (and then more time writing this review). And I am also upset because had I not taken a photo of the dashboard before returning the car, I would have no way to prove that I returned it with a full tank of gas (I actually returned it with more gas than it had when I got it).

I will probably stay away from Hertz for future rentals, but if you go with them, make sure you take the photos of the vehicle, the dashboard, etc., both when you pick it up and return. And pay attention to the unexpected charges.

Enjoyed the vehicle provided. Was upgraded to a small SUV, which was lovely. Was told upon returning the vehicle I would receive close to $200 credited back to my card. This has not happened. 😐 Even have the receipt printed showing where I was supposed to see the refund!

Experience at Sacramento Airport: Long wait time for shuttle. I had a prepaid reservation with taxes due on pickup day. Long wait time at the counter even though I received an email that I could choose my vehicle and bypass that step. The vehicle I received was the same vehicle I chose at booking. It worked perfectly for my wheelchair bound mother, both in ease of getting in and out of the vehicle and storage of her necessary items. My dissatisfaction was with the counterstaff at pickup. The CSR overcharged me in excess of $100 without explanation: when I questioned the charge he pretended to reexamine my booking, then lowered the price. However, I was still charged $25 more than my initial, confirmed and paid booking. I consider this practice to be mercenary, unscrupulous, and outright fraudulent. I will definitely warn others in my extensive online travel groups to be wary of excess charges when renting with this company.
