Recently I brought my Tohatsu 6hp motor to be serviced at The Boat Grotto. Honestly, can't complain about Mario, he was attentive. However, the full service I paid for (over 600 bucks) which I was told was a deal - normally 1000, was not at all worth it. The engine is not even running after the second time I tried to use it.
Quick background - engine was running decent, a little rough, but worked when I dropped it off. The catalyst for bringing in the motor for service was the pull cord had come unraveled. So, I asked for a full service - low end and motor oil change - tune, etc. I mentioned I had replaced the carburetor with an aftermarket unit (about $65). I was told they don't work well, but was assured they could make it work. When I picked up the engine it was not in a tank, so all I could do is start it for less than 5 seconds. Once I got it back to my boat - I realized, they didn't grease any of the fittings, and didn't even change the fuel filter. Upon my first use, it ran okay - but would not get on a plane unless the choke was fully pulled out. Not exactly the way it should perform. I informed Mario of my experience, and no apologies or offer to make it right. BTW - I was charged 350 to soak the carb to clean it, remember, it was new only 6 months old - and I had been using it. I looked up the cost for an OEM carb, and realized they ranged between 150-200. I asked why it wasn't replaced, and I got now response. I took my boat out (larger yacht) and dropped the tender in the water and tried to start the motor, and I can't even get it to run. From my POV - this was wasted time and money bringing my motor to the Boat Grotto. Beware.

I got excellent service at the Boat Grotto. The throttle control on my 22-year old bass boat wouldn't shift into gear. I called for help and Mario got me in within just a few days and completed the work within just another day! It was a tight-quarters installation and I couldn't have expected a quicker turn-around or better quality of work to replace the controls and cables. All the technicians were courteous and friendly. I would highly recommend the Boat Grotto.

I took my boat because it was misfiring. It had saltwater in the fuel tank. Boat grotto did a fuel flush and fail to check why I am getting saltwater in my fuel. I got my boat back and it was still misfiring. I took it back the following day but first I replaced spark plugs myself which were really bad. It would have been commom sense from them to check those to begin with, then the fuel injectors. I basically did some troubleshooting myself before taking it back and explained to them my findings. Boat was returned to me again and it was still misfiring but now with white smoke. I was charge over $1000, and boat is still not repaired.I gave up and took my boat to Affordable Marine. Save yourself some headaches and take your Boat to Affordable Marine they really know what they are doing. The only Mechanic at Boat Grotto that seems to know what he is doing is Junior.

Best in San Diego, by far.

If you've ever owned a boat for a period of time, you'll know that finding an honest and reliable mechanic is no easy task.

I've taken my boat to Mario at The Boat Grotto several times. He's responsive, professional, and the pricing is very fair. He has a team of very qualified and experienced mechanics. Additionally, he takes the time to follow through for his customers and is always available for questions. You're not just a boat owner with a credit card at Mario's shop. Very highly recommended.

Had a significant oil leak that precluded my use of our boat. I scheduled an inspection and a outdrive service while they had an opening. They promptly identified the origin of the leak. I was provided with repair and service options as well as an estimated completion time frame. The technicians' and owner were professional, courteous and helpful throughout. They also found and fixed a couple of issues, at no additional cost. All repairs were completed on time. They went over all repairs and serviced items to ensure I was aware and satisfied prior to me taking possession.

Very satisfied with the service and the company.

I run a Boat Rental Business in San Diego's Waters. I had a Pontoons engine shut down on me, I looked all over for a replacement and found The Boat Grotto selling a Honda 4 Stroke. It was practically brand new immaculate condition. This alone would have warranted a 5 star review. Carl helped getting the engine installed that week so I could be on the water that weekend to make money!! The level of professionalism and Quality is hard to find in a Marine Shop. I know I can count on these guys to help when its CRUNCH TIME! Thanks!
